Emilie Karrick Surrusco, president of Ellsworth Media Group, has spent the past two decades as a journalist, speechwriter and communications strategist in political Washington.

She now works in an old, converted hay barn behind the Silver Spring, Maryland home she shares with her husband, Michael, their three young children and two dogs.

  • I built on my roots as a newspaper journalist to launch a successful career as a speechwriter and communications strategist in the political advocacy world.

  • As a speechwriter, I wrote for several national nonprofit and labor union leaders before being tapped by the Obama administration to serve as senior speechwriter for a presidential Cabinet member.

  • As a communications strategist, I have propelled campaigns onto the national stage through creative media strategy – combining earned, paid and social media with good old-fashioned relationship building with reporters and editors.

  • I earned a Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Nonfiction Writing from Goucher College and a degree with honors in Political Studies and Asian Studies from Pitzer College.

 Emilie Surrusco's resume

To me, the greatest pleasure of writing is not what it's about, but the inner music that words make. - Truman Capote
